What's the difference between SHS and RHS?

SHS is Square Hollow Section — equal sides. RHS is Rectangular Hollow Section — one side longer than the other. Both are structural steel tubes used for posts, frames, patios and gates. We stock both in painted, galvanised and DuraGal finishes.

What sizes of RHS do you stock?

We stock the common run of RHS from 50×25 up through 250×150, in a range of wall thicknesses. Standard lengths are 6.0m and 7.5m, and we can cut to length on request. Ring through with the size you need and we'll confirm stock.

Do you carry galvanised pipe?

Accepted Answer

Yes. We stock galvanised and black pipe in standard sizes from 15NB through 150NB. Used for handrails, posts, fencing, plumbing and general fabrication. Walk into the yard or call us with your sizes.

What's the difference between painted and galvanised steel?

Accepted Answer

Painted steel has a black primer finish — cheaper, but you'll need to top coat it for outdoor use. Galvanised steel has a zinc coating that protects it from rust for decades, ideal for outdoor and coastal jobs. DuraGal sits in between — a lighter pre-galvanised finish.

What is DuraGal?

DuraGal is a pre-galvanised structural steel section with a clean in-line zinc coating, ready to paint or use as-is indoors. It's lighter and cheaper than full hot-dip galvanising and suits most patios, frames and sheds on the Gold Coast.

Do you sell reo bar and reinforcing mesh?

Yes. We carry N12, N16, N20 and N24 reo bar in 6.0m lengths, plus standard reinforcing mesh sheets for concrete slabs, footings and driveways. Cut-to-length is available on request.

Do you carry checkerplate and corten?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Our sheet range includes plate, hot rolled sheets, zincanneal, zincalume, galvabond, checker plate, cold rolled and corten in common gauges from 1.6 up to 6.0mm. Good for trailers, covers, flooring and architectural work.

Can I buy off-cuts? How does the off-cut bin work?

Yes — walk in and dig through the bin. Short lengths, ends and drops are priced to clear, cash and carry. Perfect for chook pens, trailer rebuilds and weekend projects. Phone ahead if you're after something specific.

Can you cut steel to length?

Accepted Answer

Yes. We cut SHS, RHS, pipe, bar and sheet to your spec at the yard. Send the cut list through with your quote request, or bring it in. There's a small cutting charge depending on the job.

Can you fabricate from a sketch or a photo?

Accepted Answer

Yes. A napkin sketch, a phone photo or a full drawing — all fine. Email it to sales@marshallsteel.com.au or drop it in at the yard and we'll quote it. Over 40 years on the tools, we've seen most of it.

Do you do small jobs, or just big ones?

Accepted Answer

Both. A single bracket or a full structural job — we'll take it on. Small fab jobs are our bread and butter, so don't feel it's too little to ask about.

What's your fabrication turnaround?

Accepted Answer

Depends on the job and the queue, but most small fab jobs are a few days to a week. Bigger structural work runs longer. We'll give you a realistic timeline when we quote — no fairy tales.

Do you do hot-dip galvanising?

Accepted Answer

We don't dip in-house, but we arrange hot-dip galvanising through our trusted local galvanisers as part of the fab job. You get your steel back ready to install.

Can you do mobile or on-site welding?

Accepted Answer

Yes, for the right job. Site welds, repairs and on-site fit-ups on the Gold Coast — give us a call with the details and we'll let you know if it's something we can do.

Can I bring in my own steel for fabrication?

Accepted Answer

Generally yes, though we'd rather supply and fab so we know the steel's right. If you've got your own material, ring through first to talk through what you need done.

Where do you deliver?

Across the Gold Coast, Tweed Heads and Northern NSW. If you're outside that area, give us a call — we can usually sort something with a freight company.

Do you have a crane truck?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Our crane truck handles long lengths, heavy beams and awkward drops directly into your yard or onto site. Saves you the lift and the headache.

How much does delivery cost?

It depends on the load, the distance and whether you need the crane. We'll quote delivery alongside the steel so there are no surprises on the invoice.

Can I get same-day delivery?

Sometimes — depends on the truck schedule and the job. Best bet is to call early in the day on 07 5576 6037 and we'll do what we can to fit you in.

How do I get a quote?

Do you charge a surcharge for cards?

Accepted Answer

Card surcharges may apply on credit card payments to cover bank fees. EFT and cash carry no surcharge. We'll let you know at the counter or on your invoice.

Do you offer trade prices?

Yes. If you're a tradie or running an account with us, you'll get trade pricing. Ring through or come in and have a chat about setting up an account.

How long is a quote valid for?

Steel prices move, so quotes are typically valid for 7 days from issue. If yours has aged, give us a call and we'll refresh it on the spot.

What are your opening hours?

Monday to Friday 7am–4pm, and Saturday 7am–11am. Closed Sundays and public holidays. Best to ring ahead if you're driving a fair way to make sure we've got what you need.
