Universal beams (UB) and universal columns (UC) are I-shaped hot-rolled structural sections to AS/NZS 3679.1, used as patio beams, lintels and columns across the Gold Coast.

UB and UC are the structural backbones of most steel-framed buildings on the Gold Coast. UB (Universal Beam) is deep and narrow — built to span horizontally. UC (Universal Column) is closer to square — built to take vertical load.
Patio beams over the back deck, lintels over garage openings, the goal-posts that hold up a verandah, the columns under a mezzanine — it's all UB and UC work. Engineered jobs only: this isn't pick-a-size territory, your engineer or builder will specify the section.
We can deliver onto site with the crane truck — handy when you've got a 610UB125 to land in the right spot.

Common questions on UB / UC.
- What's the difference between UB and UC?
- UB (Universal Beam) is deeper than it is wide — designed to span and carry bending loads. UC (Universal Column) is closer to square — designed to carry vertical compression. Both are I-shaped, but the proportions are tuned to the job.
- How do I read a designation like 250UB37.3?
- First number is the nominal depth in mm (around 250mm), then UB (Universal Beam), then the mass per metre in kg/m (37.3 kg/m). So 250UB37.3 = ~250mm-deep beam weighing 37.3 kg per metre.
- Can you deliver beams to site?
- Yes — the crane truck is set up for it. Tell us the size, the address and where you want it landed and we'll work it out.
- Do you cut and drill beams for fabrication?
- Yes — bandsaw cuts, hole punching and coping are all part of the fabrication service. Send a drawing and we'll quote.
- Do you deliver universal beams to Gold Coast sites?
- Yes — the crane truck is set up to lift and land beams onto patio posts, garage openings and slab edges across the Gold Coast, Tweed Heads and Northern NSW.
- What's the heaviest UB you stock?
- 610UB125 — 612mm deep at 125 kg/m — is the heaviest off the rack. Heavier specials are on order from the mill.
- Can you fabricate from UB and UC?
- Yes — bandsaw cutting, hole punching, coping, end plates and welding are part of the fab shop service. Send a drawing and we'll quote.
- How much does a universal beam cost?
- Price depends on the designation (e.g. 250UB37.3), length and finish. Send the spec and we'll quote same day.
